Previving 1-250

Previving is an extension of a series called Redefining Beauty Project, an ongoing collaboration with women across the world, who have shared images of themselves after enduring surgeries, biopsies, or radiation due to the affects of breast cancer.  The goal, to redefine expectations in the context of letting go, and of rebuilding.  Previving is my own journey of living with the threat of breast cancer.  After learning I carry the BRCA 1 gene mutation, I made the difficult decision to have a prophylactic mastectomy in order to reduce my risk of developing the disease.  As breast and ovarian cancers are diseases that are linked to external archetypes of femininity, when our bodies are altered, our identities are often affected.  Like the clothes and bras that cover the scars to make us feel “normal,” and “like ourselves again,” the series reveals the layers and complexities of living with our altered and imperfect bodies; revealing the fragility and strength of the body as it heals.

250 images out of the 365 in the series.  My intention is to create a large installation, exhibiting all of them clipped to the wall without frames or glass, invoking a visceral and gritty acceptance of body. I have also converted the series into a large format projection.

Selected works are available for acquisition and exhibition. Please inquire for details.
