Mixed media 16 x 16 on wood panel. I used images of places to evoke the feelings around memories. The piece has a lot of texture and layers to reveal the depth of emotions.
New work this year taking images of hands and layering beneath dripping paint and gold leaf and glitter. My intention is to build upon the emotions of loss and love.
This piece began with a photograph, enlarged and transferred onto the canvas. The close up image of the hand symbolizes our connections. They are point of contact between people through touch and holding hands. I have always looked at the veins in my hands that echo my moms as being the symbolic source of bloodlines that connect mothers and daughters. However, the way that this piece is created reflects that there also exists a disconnection. There is a separation between mothers and daughters and in this case my mother's stroke caused a disconnection between mind and body. My work is inspired by the power that art has on healing both body and soul.
Using fiber papers, pastels, paint and photo transfers, I explore the layers and complexities of the human condition with all of its imperfections. I create work to reflect elements of both fragility and strength, separation and connection, in hopes to redefine expectations, to communicate on a deep and meaningful level. The underlying theme of, “out of darkness comes light,” which is the foundation of all philosophical and religious study, has been incorporated throughout my career to connect mind, body, and spirit. I hope to express how out of struggle we find meaning and out of hope we learn to heal.
This 24x60" panel is on unstretched canvas. I plan on hanging it suspended between wire (image available upon request). The work is layered with paint, pastels, fiber paper to create depth.
After working on the series "Holding On and Letting Go" where I used images of hands, I found covering them with layers of medium, gold, paint and paper, created the depth of emotion I was feeling. I wanted to build on the feeling of loss and grief by covering over the image.
These 4 pieces sold individually can be put together as a grid to create a new piece. The series covers photo transfers with layers of material, paints, medium, and metallics. I am focusing on the idea of creating the feelings that we keep hidden, beneath the surface as time passes after the death of a loved one.
